Videos covering causes of claims and best trade practices

The Club's extensive range of loss prevention videos focus on specific aspects of the shipping industry and are based on trends noticed in the Club's claims data.

A selection of the range of videos can be viewed on-line using Windows Media Player. Click on the image (below-right) to launch the movie clip player. Click Here if you do not have Windows Media Player installed.

The causes of claims

Human error is well established as the prime cause of accidents and claims and the purpose of these videos is therefore to better educate crew, and other people involved in shipping or the transport of cargo, of the consequences and implications of their actions.

No Room for Error

Designed principally for senior management and company trainers, No Room for Error focuses on human error and the reasons why people make mistakes.

The DVD uses a series of five maritime scenarios to illustrate the root causes of human error. The incidents are reviewed in terms of the latent failure categories:
procedures, hardware, design, maintenance, error enforcing conditions, housekeeping, incompatible goals, communication, organization, training and defences. Click to watch a video clip or for more information on No Room for Error.

Cargo Matters Series

Cargo Matters
At least seven out of ten cargo claims arise from incidents caused by human error. This series aims at increasing awareness of the causes of P&I claims for cargo damage and loss. The first video, Cargo Matters, concentrates on general cargo loss prevention and the best practice in the context of operational management. Other videos in the series concentrates on specific trades.

Any Fool can Stuff a Container

Over $5 billion is spent every year on claims due to damage of cargo in containerised units.

This video is essentially for shippers - the customers of the shipping lines who are normally responsible for packing the cargo and stowing it in containers. The keynote is: “It’s not surprising that many cargoes are ruined simply because they’re poorly packed in their containers. Shippers’ profits and goodwill get written off with them.”

Taking Care Series
With personal injury claims and costs rising, the Taking Care videos increase awareness among vessels crews of personal injury incidents that can happen. The more specialised Taking Care (Cruise and Ferry) and Taking Care (Offshore) concentrate on passenger and oil rig personnel accidents.

Counting the Cost

Counting the Cost - Highlights where the bulk of the Club's funds are going. This video increases awareness among masters and officers of the type of P&I claims that cost the shipping industry $2 billion annually.

This video provides a good summary of P&I claims and may accompany any of the more specific Club videos.

The Mariner's Role

Produced in co-operation with the Nautical Institute, this video highlights to the mariner how, why and what evidence should be collected when an incident has occurred and why evidence is so important in ensuring that just settlements are achieved when claims are brought against the shipowner, sometimes many months or years after the event.

Ship Visits

Ship Visits, the first of the videos to be produced, highlights the Club's ship quality initiative. It concentrates on the role of the ship inspectors and the inspections they undertake, emphasising common defects observed and good/bad practices.
